Long before Lutong bridge was constructed, the area had a ferry service, possibly at or near the site of what is now the Lutong bridge today. These pictures were taken on 4th July, 1945 during the ending stages of the Japanese occupation, by the Australian 2/13 infantry battalion aiming to reoccupy Sarawak from Japanese.
Second world war bomb shelter / tunnels located on the hillsides of Canada Hill provided shelter during bombing raids during World War II. Much of Miri was flattened and burned out during this period.
Choon Cheong Departmental Store was two-story a supermarket/departmental store contained within its own building, a precursor to the 'hypermarket' of Miri today.
The well known international hotel chain Pullman is being built at the Miri Waterfront, and will be known as the Pullman Miri Waterfront hotel. The hotel is designated a 5-star hotel, and marks the entry of a new international chain hotel in Miri in ten years.
