Mukah is a coastal town in the Mukah District in the Mukah Division of Sarawak by the South China Sea. Mukah is accessible by air by MASwings from Miri, approximately a one hour flight.
Historically, Mukah was an ancient trading and fishing port, situated at the mouth of the Mukah River adjacent to the South China Sea, and originally an outpost of the Sultanate of Brunei which later became part of Sarawak in 1861. The "Pesta Kaul" festival, celebrated by the local fishermen in April is one of the many major events of the Melanau calendar.

The Miri Long Jetty was a mile long and stretches out into the sea. This jetty was built so that cargo is easily offloaded from ships to Miri at the tip of the Miri Peninsular. The Long Jetty was a considerable place of interest in the 1970 to late 1990s.
In the 1920s, these were the years when the Miri field began to decline. Exploration was carried out further and further afield. In 1926 an exploratory team had gone as far as Padang Barawa between the Sungai Seria and Sungai Barawa. Not much attention was paid to their findings then, but now with the Miri field declining the old maps and charts were taken out and studied again.
