Flash floods around Miri town 2009

Video of sudden downpour of torrential rain for just over an hour causes flash floods around Miri town at noon 3rd of February, 2009. The higher-than-usual amount of precipitation over the past month also caused many landslides, potholes and road breakages, flooding and bridge collapses around Miri, taxing rescue workers and engineers and endangering lives.

The story begins with a Mr. C.C. (Claude Champion) de Crespigny, then the Resident of Baram, who was the first to record the presence of oil in Sarawak. The entry in his diary, dated 31st July 1882, refers to oil discovered in some 18 wells dug by hand by the local inhabitants.

There is actually a road that goes beneath this bridge linking to Lutong Baru, effectively making this bridge Miri's very first 'overpass'.
