Miri now has an international standard go-kart race track with a Class I classification.
With six high mast floodlights around the track, competitions can also be held at night. The roofed grandstand can seat 600 spectators, while other facilities included lobby, administration office, food and beverage outlets, canteen, First Aid room, and VIP spectator lounge.
Measuring 1.3 km in length and 10 meters in width, this track is currently the longest go kart race track and only one in Sarawak & Sabah, built to the international track standards for go-karting.
The originality of this track is its unique `separable’ ability. When the need arises, the track can be separated, each measuring 500 meters and 800 meters respectively. During a race, these tracks will be `joined’ again, and the full length of 1.3km international track length is once again achieved. For the safety of the spectators, a high concrete wall is erected in front of the grandstand.
In calculating the degrees, slopes and slants of the track; the camber is set at a 2.5 degrees gradient on all straight stretches, and a 5 degrees gradient at super-elevations.
In minimizing overall energy consumption, the 8 paddocks and garages are designed with opening between the truss and the roof, enabling cross ventilation for cooling. Six High Mast Foundation floodlights have been erected to enable drivers who wish to go for a test drive during the night.
The design of grandstand is light yet aesthetic, signifying flight or speed; which are two reflections of the go-karting sport. Built with a high roof, it allows maximum cross ventilation. Designed in a wide span, column free fashion; the grandstand provides generous space for the spectators.
The double roofing system is insulated with rockwool, to minimize heat and noise. Struts on the roof act as a tension & compression device; ensuring stability during strong wind uplifts. The ceiling of the roof is reflective; and with the use of up lights it minimizes glare and provide extra illumination, thus reducing power consumption.
The racetrack facility is appropriately turfed and landscaped to keep it in check and balance of the ecosystem, and the surrounding area of the facility is still a lush carpet of vegetation. An efficient water sewerage and reticulation system serves to divert rainfall into the 3 man-made ponds. If the water levels reach a high point, an exit system is in place to channel it out to the nearby natural pond.
The track has undergone an efficient usage of resources, with a 90% ratio of building materials sourced locally.
Go-Kart practice races are usually held on Sunday afternoons, with statewide or even nationwide competitions held a few times yearly. International races are in the plans. Miri is home to several skilled karters, including a pre-teen karter who has won several races and established a reputation for being very fast.
